How Rug Size Calculator Works
Rug sizing depends on your room dimensions and your furniture placement strategy. There are three common approaches:
- All legs on the rug: The rug is large enough that all furniture sits entirely on it. This requires the biggest rug.
- Front legs on the rug: Only the front legs of sofas and chairs sit on the rug. This is the most popular approach and uses a mid-size rug.
- No legs on the rug: The rug sits in the center, and all furniture surrounds it. This uses the smallest rug but can look disconnected.
Standard rug sizes are: 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, and 9x12 (in feet).
How to Interpret Your Result
If the calculator recommends a 5x7: You're working with a smaller room or a compact seating area. A 5x7 works well in a bedroom at the foot of the bed, a small sitting area, or under a dining table that seats 4.
If it recommends a 6x9: This is a mid-range size that works for apartments, small living rooms, or as a bedroom rug under a Queen bed. It can handle a smaller sofa and two chairs in a front-legs-on layout.
If it recommends an 8x10: The most versatile size for living rooms. It handles most standard furniture arrangements with the front-legs-on approach. This is the safe choice if you're unsure.
If it recommends a 9x12: You have a larger room, or you want all furniture fully on the rug. A 9x12 can anchor a full living room set in a 14 x 18 room or larger. It's also the right size for a dining table that seats 8.
Some Questions You May Have
Should All Furniture Be on the Rug?
It depends on your room and the look you want. 'All legs on' creates a cohesive seating area and suits larger rooms. 'Front legs on' is more common, anchoring the furniture with a smaller rug.
What Size Rug for a Queen Bed?
For a Queen bed (60 x 80 inches), an 8x10 rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed extends about 22 inches on each side and 24 inches at the foot. That gives you a soft landing when you step out of bed in the morning.
Can a Rug Be Too Big?
Yes. If the rug goes wall-to-wall with only 2-3 inches of floor showing on each side, it looks like poorly installed carpet. The general guideline is to leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall.
How Far Should a Rug Be from the Wall?
Aim for 12 to 18 inches of exposed floor between the rug edge and the wall on all sides. In smaller rooms, you can go as low as 8 inches. In larger rooms, 18-24 inches looks proportional.
Do I Need a Rug in Every Room?
No. Kitchens and bathrooms typically use smaller mats instead. Let your lifestyle and flooring type guide the decision.
